Fan Made:Ramblin' 'Round - Linda Ronstadt

sex in society...

reading an article in todays Sunday Star Times by Kymberlee Fernandes about Tongan artist "Ola Leha and her exhibition at AUT.
"Ofa Leha is taking a stand against the supposed ancient ritual from the middle ages regarding proof of virginity by a deflowering ritual.
good on her.
without a written record there is no guarantee whatsoever that this ritual is ancient.
and where did they get white sheets in the 1300's?
It seems as if this ritual is just another controlling act of the patriarchy aided and abetted by the adoption of christianity less than a century ago and a desire to present as having always been obedient and observant to some introduced but convenient method of controlling women.
This has been compounded by the work of one Derek Freeman who for reasons of his own  took it upon himself to refute Margaret Meads seminal work "Coming Of Age In Samoa" which was swallowed whole and condemmed by the religious patriarchy and rejected over the whole of Polynesia.
Freeman was quite mad and was caught one night sawing of the penis from a wooden effigy in the Museum Of the South Pacific.
Freeman has been supported by journalists like Fairfax's Mike Fields who also seems to have some religious bias and thinks his own thoughts are facts.
Regarding ancient ritual Leha is recommended to read Meads book on Sex And Temperament In Three Primitive Societies.
Here she   shows definitively how young girls are made to sleep with their father till their first menses where the practice ceases other wise the girl is used and eaten.
Trying to deny this aspect of human culture is not productive of understanding how we got be what we are when many think that doesn't matter.

Localism In New Zealand...

Good public meeting in Carterton last night organised by Wairarapa Voice.
Speakers were:
Ollive Hartwich; The New Zealand Initiative
David Voegelsanger: Ambassador of Switzerland to New Zealand
Malcolm Alexander; Local Government New Zealand

The main thrust was the organisation of Swiss political life and the difference between that and New Zealand and how it works.
In New Zealand 88% of taxation goes to central government and only 12% to local government which is a huge indication of centralisation.
Swiss political life is operated on an entirely different basis and directed by local people for local needs.
Switzerland is the wealthiest nation per capita in the world with a highly developed industrial base and close to markets.
To make New Zealand over would be a huge job that would take some time to create if a big bang was not agreed to and set off.
This event is not likely to happen anytime soon but maybe it is time for more independence of the municipalities.
The major example is Queenstown   where the local government has to pay for all infrastructure out of  the ratesbut the government takes all the taxes.
issues like this need to be raised and discussion must happen.
This is not to increase the total tax take  but to redistribute the tax take more fairly.

I dont think anything is going to happen soon but the discussion must start.

now for something completely different...
