WWII uncovered: Heroes of the Battle of Britain: Sergeant Antoni Glowacki
Polish pilots in RAF squadrons played a substantial part in all operations against the Luftwaffe in increasing numbers. One of the finest examples of their work was a remarkable feat accomplished by Sergeant Antoni Glowacki of No. 501 Squadron RAF, who on 24 August 1940 shot down three Bf 109s and two Ju 88 bombers. He was one of only three pilots who achieved 'Ace-in-a-Day' status during the battle. (IWM)
Glowacki separated from the RAF with the rank of Squadron Leader. A highly decorated pilot, Glowacki was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross ,War Order of Virtuti Militari and the Distinguished Flying Medal. After demobilization he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force, where he served until 1960. He worked subsequently in the Civil Aviation Department in Wellington, where he was responsible for sports and executive aviation.
Antoni Glowacki passed away on 27 April 1980 in Wellington at the age of 70 years old. Lest We Forget.
