poor old grant smithies from the SST. he still thinks music is something you look at and he is still retailing the story about waylon and the big bopper get over it. but to call Buddy Holly the progenitor of nerd-geek rock is to do BUddy Holly and rock and roll a monumental disservice. Both the Beatles and the rolling stones included Buddy's material in their early days and on their albums. Holly was among the first to include a self played solo in his music. Solos that are still copied today by anybody with any pretensions to being a musician. smithies is a bit like Lester Bangs who imagined that all solos's were played note for note off a sheet of music and that the function of a musician was to look good while they played the flyshit?
