There is no concern for the past.
It is another country.
Everything is subordinate to acquisitive consumerism.
The great communistic movements that Carr was ideologically attracted to are over except for the stalinist and trotskyite diehards.
The world is turning to shit.
seas are poisoned.
lakes dry up.
forests murdered.
species are made extinct.
turtles die mistaking plastic bags for jellyfish.
meanwhile the man in the street dreams of emulating his betters by indulging in foreign trips, fast cars, expensive electronic gadgets. expensive hotels, noisy toys and all manner of gew gaws that are used once for distraction and then cast aside for the next big thing.
