LEAD BELLY (1888?-1949) aka Huddie Leadbetter was a unique and powerful artist. He was the King of the 12 String Guitar, and used his penetrating tenor voice on a huge repertoire that included blues, gospel, and original topical ballads about the Hindenburg, the Titanic, Howard Hughes, Hitler and more. He also knew tons of folk songs, including cowboy songs, children's play party songs, and his most famous song "Goodnight Irene" which was a top mainstream hit in 1950 by the Weavers after his passing. John and Alan Lomax first recorded Leadbelly in Angola in 1933; he went on to record hundreds of songs, and was later associated with the earliest New York folk scene along with Woody Guthrie, Sonny and Brownie, and Pete Seeger. A bigger-than-life hero, love Lead Belly!
