Many of us noticed that Christopher Luxon's remarks on 1 News to Jessica MuckInMyEye last night - were presented without any critical analysis whatsoever.
1 News framed up Mr Luxon's remarks by saying...
"Some have been calling for restrictions to ease for months".
"Some" like Brian Tamaki, Chantelle Baker, Damien Dement, Kelvyn Alp, Hannah Spierer, David Seymour and Chris Bishop have indeed all called for us to cast NZ health advice aside for months.
It would be fair to say that "some" have been very closely aligned about these matters - despite Omicron's first wave in March - April and second wave in July - August .
Strangely Jessica did not include any of the more radical "some" in her report last night and instead chose to focus only upon the views of Luxon and Seymour.
After TVNZ suggested "some" had been calling for an easing of restrictions for ages - Mr Luxon was then shown talking with Jessica and he said :
"Kiwis have been over it for ages and have moved on and the country needs to move on too, and we've seen the rest of the world has done exactly that." - said Luxon like a tape recording.
Jessica failed to challenge this "blanket generalisation" that Mr Luxon cast over all New Zealanders ( Kiwis ).
It is 100% evident that large portions of New Zealand did not agree with Mr Luxon's remarks at all - so why not take him on about that?
It could be that this period of time is just a trough between peaks and we must be vigilant about new variants and how we can stand up systems again if required.
Mr Luxon blindly called for an end to MIQ in early December 2021 despite the way the whole world was preparing for the new variant and the threat was not quite understood.
At that time Mr Luxon told media that the world had moved on.
Jessica might have included that fact in her report last night but failed to do so.
It seems like TVNZ barely blinked at that blind reckless statement from Mr Luxon and intended to carry on as if it did not even happen.
New Zealand's MIQ system bought us time - about six weeks - and during that time we enjoyed a Christmas holiday, secured sufficient RATs, distributed these RATs to outlets and got anti-virals into the right medical hands and boosters administered to the most vulnerable.
We took personal responsibility too. Many of us purchased some form of home supplies in case we got sick - and many had their own Pulse Oximeter, Pain killers, throat lozenges, thermometers, dry cough mixtures, RATs, easy meals, tissues etc...at home.
We had the time to prepare because MIQ was stopping Omicron at the border for weeks - and we had a plan which made sense in comparison to anything the National Party proposed, like how we needed RATs in supermarkets ...
Early in 2022 preparations were made for Winter - and we knew it would be a combo of flu and Covid and many of us wanted to save the Health System.
We wore the masks, we stayed home when sick, we followed the rules and we saved lives - while Brian Tamaki and his friends protested outside Parliament about their own selfish FreeDumb - and threats were made against the PM, politicians, journalists and "some" even burned down a playground.
Jessica failed to mention last night that Mr Luxon thought we should have some sympathy for the protestors back in early March 2022 - when he was saying the world was over it and we need to move on.
At every step the Government has sought and considered health advice based on the evidence to base their Cabinet Decisions upon and after many OIA requests this has been shown to be pretty decent sound advice.
Mr Luxon also claimed the "world had moved on" from Covid in June 2022 when we had a small trough in community cases before the second wave of Omicron struck in July 2022.
Mr Luxon was photographed in Singapore in June 2022 not wearing a mask - and said to RNZ Morning Report when he returned home that "the world had moved on" despite almost everyone around him in Singapore actually wearing a mask ( properly ).
This repeated blind mantra "that the world had moved on" was spoken by Luxon while deaths from Covid climbed and my wife's favourite Uncle died with covid.
How offensive was Christopher Luxon as he ploughed on with such insensitivity with his selfish ambition and his political agenda ?
And here was TVNZ propping this man up as if he was right all along?
I thought about the dead and their families and Mr Luxon and how Jessica presented him as "told you all along" and how the PM was just trying to control our lives.
Some of you were so angry you could not comment.
Some nearly attacked their own Television with swear words and kitchen knives.
David Evan's Bailey scribed an absolute bullseye comment about the appalling assertions made and the likes of Jessica and her angle.
Vickie remarked to me as we watched 1 News together - how Luxon's comments were so detached from what we've all just been through this Winter.
Detached from science, from our real lives, from caring about any of us really.
Yes - and here was TVNZ 1 news - with Jessica MuckInMyEye presenting a platform for the same sorts of views that are held by Brian Tamaki and his ilk - without any critical analysis at all.
Many noticed the same sort of thing on TV3 as well.
It's possible it's all really a gross attempt at "balance" by a young journalistic ego trying to win a hard hitting political journalist award?
A reach for recognition and a celebration before her peers?
TVNZ 1 News seemed to be trying to include Opposition perspectives to satisfy the - standard for balance - but at the cost of scrutiny about those bizarre and dangerous perspectives.
TVNZ wasted no time filtering out the important positive assurances and evidence provided by the Government for their decisions in news bulletins - but TVNZ also have no time to critique the crazy dangerous positions of the Opposition.
Concision results in misinformation prevailing.
The dangerous, life threatening and crazy positions spoken by the likes of Luxon and Seymour just sit before the nation unchallenged - and there is no doubt that this influences some swing voters who may not have paid attention and who do not think matters through.
The world got Covid months before NZ and so it will move on before NZ does...it's pretty simple really.
Luxon relies on TVNZ not spelling out how the timeframes in NZ are offset - along with the seasonal opposition of the hemispheres.
This gross disservice to supply proper context by the TVNZ 1 News newsroom should be corrected and the public should express their desire for much better.
How dare Luxon and Seymour get away with their remarks unchecked by a lazy, context free media.
Just more evidence that TVNZ is trying to swing the 2023 election really.
Lastly - the assertion made by Jessica in her question :
"Isn't this about you giving up control you have over New Zealanders lives?" ....really was beyond the pale.
It beggars belief that the PM imposed or relaxed all those restrictions upon us based on a whim she had for control over our lives - rather than these decisions being based on sound Health Advice at every step.
"If it turns out Jacinda has saved my life on a whim, I will never forgive her", said Glenn Jeffery ( lol ).
Perfectly snookered right there, thanks Glenn.
Voyager Award criteria is all about how much impact the journalist's news reports had - and holding the powerful to account at the same time.
The award criteria do not incentivise journalists to report the truth nor consider the welfare of democracy.
There's no profit to a journalist in spelling out Luxon's record on Covid - or Seymour's nutball positions that may have resulted in tens of thousands of preventable deaths.
Awards can mean journalists keep their job in upcoming mergers plus awards can mean more prestige, greater audience ratings and advertising revenue.
The need to win awards at TVNZ may be heightened because nobody at 1 News won much in 2022.
Did Jessica get the memo her job was on the line and she needed an award to catch up with Tova and Jenna?
Do these "egotistical and career" dynamics combine to produce an "over effort" to throw any old unjustified stone at the PM ( the angle without context ) and raise Opposition Voices up without any fair criticism - no matter how perilous, shaky or extreme their views may be?
Whatever is at work behind this shocking low level of reporting on TVNZ 1 News - it's producing an unfair playing field - which is pushing absolute idiots and morons into power.
Does Jessica really want NZ saddled with PM Christopher Trumpxon and his Deputy David Attila SeyTrump?
I think the time has come when Jessica and her Newsroom needs to get a loud clear message from decent fair minded New Zealanders ...in the form of many complaints about this garbage.
