It was a concatenation of inputs.
better agricultural techniques,
sugar,
pumpkins,
tomatos,
maize,
potatoatos,
gold discoveries.
all contributed to greater energy inputs and the ability to pay for them.
The UN has at last come to the party with pronouncements that it is time to de-populate but I wont hold my breath over that one.
