Listening to the great white father of the Pacific Phillip Field who seems to think that before white people arrived in the pacific the natives were noble savages with the full panoply of higher values and principles and the rule of law that they learned in the great academy of the pacific vastness.
He seems to think there was no cannibalism in the pacific and especially no cannibalism in the Marquessas mainly because it offends his version of the noble savage.
He cites one of Hermans Melvilles novel as the originator of lies so to speak of the instance of cannibalism.
However Philip Field is remiss in reading history at all. His history is the history of the pacific since printing presses arrived and time began.
He cant handle Margaret Mead. to read her means intelllectual work and you cant wrap fish and chips in her books.
He should read Island Civilisations of Polynesia by Robert C Suggs for the full rundown.
Now he is offended basically because someone from Europe has the temerity to trerspass in his territory.
wah wah wah.
It seems that Field prefers the lie and print the legend rather than a full exploration of the reality of events.
