Weather is cold, raining and freezing. Snow down to 300 feet.
Last night I watched "How Green Was My Valley".
Another of John Fords tour de force cinematic masterpieces..
The main thing for me was how people in those days,(mythical?), entertained themselves in the days before tv and films and radio.
In the end it is the human drama that counts and that is the thing that is lacking in all New Zealand films. NO matter what the nature of the contrivance of the plot there never never seems to be any real empathy tith the characters. Its all voyeurism and creepy.
I digress.
Also last night I watched 'Star Wars', "The Phantom Menace".
5*****.
Looking for Leonard Maltin and a copy of WHat Happened in History fell out of the bookshelf so I checked his take on language.
It revolves around the structure of the larynx and the hyoid bone.
Apparently it moved into an evolved position to support the tongue and thereby gave humans the ability to articulate sound and invent speech and language.
Another serendipitous act of natural selection.
For fun I wikied language and the usual suspects popped up.
Saussure, Levi-Strauss, Lacan, french confabulators who seem to think it is the duty of academia or French academia at least to complicate and obfuscate rather than explicate.
And then you get the raving Marxists like Gnome Chomsky and the idiot Pinker who go for the innateness of language so it can be interwoven with the hegeleian dialectic and provide scientific proof for the inevitablity of socialism.
What they dont understand is that life is adventitious and there is only one hidden structure which is the logic that comes from utterance.
I.e. a sound becomes a word and then it is either true or untrue.
Its that simple but read a book on linguistics and its filled with jargon and diagrams that in end dont mean anything.
Dig.
