He's a self-made man....I used to tease him and he'd tease me, we had a very friendly brother-sister relationship....close and yet he was his own person too.....

I admired him greatly and purposely sought out the little house in New Orleans he spoke of where he was raised. I was stunned when I saw the place in the old French Quarter...he never elaborated but it was a tiny looked like a 2-room house.....I completely changed my viewpoint of him with added high respect.......he rarely spoke of how tough it must have been, working as a kid....I grew up poor too, worked since I was 9, but nothing like what he had to deal with.....he is a self-made man, a cultured person who always had the flair for knowing the right words to say to make you like yourself, and feel comfortable with him....a no-BS person but with class, who through his own efforts as a working youngster tap-dancing on the stage with his mother and his aunt.....working odd-jobs and going to drum school, working early on as a musician, grew to be a man's man who cared about everyone........with class, dignity, and a generous spirit of great warmth and friendliness. Also with great tact in his work. His success started in 1947 in recording, after his years in the military WW Two.

My son, after his Dad died early in life, was sort of adopted by Earl and to this day credits Earl with showing him how to play drums and as a Father to him....

Earl had that magnetism to change kids, and help youth instantly with his presence and personality........he was a great man, and a wonderful Friend to all fine Musicians, a brilliant Top Musician, and just the best to be around and work with.
