Well they will need more than a petition outside the supermarket to alter the trajectory of this one.
It will take a proper campaign and some smarts.
Winning a few votes to get on to council is not the same as trying to do a Canute and turn back the tide.
It can be done but not the way they are doing it.
They are being led like lambs to the slaughter.
Take a look at Sears Roebuck.
Thirty years ago they were in the top ten of the Fortune 500.
Then they built a tower, (monument to themselves) and didn't even mention Walmart in their annual report the year they slipped out of the 500. (still in but only at 87).
Ditto GM and IBM.
They made many bad mistakes and the process became about how to make decisons and not what the decisions were in fact about.
The same thing is happening here!

A whole lot bureaucracy tied up in knots while they delude themselves that they are doing something.
