just the facts mam...

Ace piece from Rosemary Mcleod in yesterdays Dompost.
The answer to her question is not simple and is concatenation of factors.
first the world has climbed a wittgensteinian ladder and cant remmember where we came from.
you know. the old switcheroo.
second the people have become adventitious to the system which is now driving people.
third the world population has exponentialised and there are more and more ruggered indeevidyoualls clamouring for goods, stuff and having their bums kissed by the masses or anyone else they can suborn.

World population milestones in billions (USCB estimates)

It is estimated that the world population reached one billion for the first time in 1804. It was another 123 years before it reached two billion in 1927, but it took only 33 years to reach three billion in 1960.[77] Thereafter, the global population reached four billion in 1974, five billion in 1987, six billion in 1999 and, according to the United States Census Bureau, seven billion in March 2012.[78] The United Nations, however, estimated that the world population reached seven billion in October 2011.[7][8][9]
According to current projections, the global population will reach eight billion by 2024, and will likely reach around nine billion by 2037. Alternative scenarios for 2050 range from a low of 7.4 billion to a high of more than 10.6 billion.[79] Projected figures vary depending on underlying statistical assumptions and the variables used in projection calculations, especially the fertility variable. Long-range predictions to 2150 range from a

as for the baby boomers it ain't their fault.
The 1960's were a time when all the technological advances derived from the mass productions of the second world war reached their peak.
Oil was cheap and abundant.
The oil shocks of the 70's  were only a temporary setback and then came the flood of digital products demanded by the space programme and miniaturization devised by the Japanese tech industries.
and the so called green revolution allowed many more births to swell the population.

as for the Hippies.
in essence they were not revolutionary but reactionary.
they were asking for a spiritual revival that manifested itself in the born again movement and other weird growths.

and for drugs it should be noted that every addiction has as its primary goal to prevent the addict feeling their true thoughts and feelings.
from the little old lady with her cup of tea to the drug fiend requiring more and more daily doses of heroin they are just attempts to delude the user that they have control over their feelings.

When Society Becomes an Addict
in the final analysis  a person cannot grow while they are trapped in a substance cycle but if you are a doctor or a lawyer or banker what does it matter?
