suicide is painless...

Karl Menninger

So goes the refrain from MASH. But it isn't. Suicide is like depression. Anger turned inwards. The suicide is a killer who cannot kill the person they want to so instead can only kill themselves to ease the terrible pain that they are enduring. Top of the piccies today is Karl Menninger who wrote the book on suicide but no one wants to read it. The press is only interested in blood; 'if it bleeds then let it lead" and there is a whole cadre of counsellors and affected people who want to make a meal out of it for their own economic and psychological needs. Its all pretty tawdry really but that's the kiwi way. Mate!
Its about time the press did some proper investigation and resurrected the insights propounded by Menninger and his associates and then put this bogey to rest instead of allowing this continual angst fest to assume centre stage with never any hope of resolution while the protagonists continue to insist on personal priorities and who have no interest whatsoever in feeling it and healing it. Until people know what is the nature of the beast then the longer  will this sad commentary on the psychic life of our nation continue to manifest itself in emotional outburst that serve no purpose except to sell newspapers.
It should also be noted that those making the most noise are those who feel the most guilt for the tragedies that they have wrought by their greediness, selfishness and lack of empathy and feeling for those who needed it most..

ON a lighter note I watched Cider House Rules over the weekend and achieved an emotional catharsis that involved feeling empathy for others instead of myself.
