Meanwhile I am trying to make some sense out of an article on George Hegel the German philosopher beloved of the Marxists. He thought that history displays a rational process of development and by studying history we can understand our own nature and place in the world. A philosophers conceit akin to the religious notion that the world was created with some purpose in mind or perhaps a teleological event writ large. Some think that history has a direction we can discern and is heading in the direction of a goal that is welcome.
This implies that humanity is being directed by anoother power that is not discernible but yet having power over the efforts of man to control his own destiny.
In the event mankind can be show to have the supreme ability to react to circumstance and create the things that it needs in response to exigiencies. Otherwise Hegels notion is really an argument from design. Or as Voltaire would say God gave humans noses to rest eyeglasses on.
In other words Hegel saw the world as being ordered by rational laws of nature.
Hegels abstraction was the dialectic of a thesis, an antithesis and a resulting synthesis. Marx tried to fill in this equation by linking supposed natural laws to mans innate revolutionary tendency.
Well of ocurse all of this is bosh. Hegel was mistaken in thinking tha the history of the collective was the key to the individual being able to understand himself when in reality it is only the key to understanding any situation which inevtiably is the result of stupid vain politicians trying to enforce their will on the majority in response to identical opposiing groups.
The key to self understanding is the science of psychoanalysis which is not for everyone and neither is history for everyone. It is a specialist undertaking and the goal is to understand the stupidity of vainglorious individuals who have temporary power.
There is no more to it than that. Any desire for laws or purpose is pure romaticism and the creation of a system a club to beat others with.
There is no purpose. The only thing that counts is self preservation and kin. The rest is superfluous. Humans that haven't been conditioned into abject dependency on the system are capable of adapting to circumstances.
At any time the earth is subject to forces, events and accidental occurences that are not under our control such as annihilation by cosmic rays from some as yet undiscovered or unsuspected source or more prosaically the complete destruction of life by events and cuases created by man himself. Climate change or nuclear war or other unforseen disasters. Humanity's hope is humanity itself and when the cars and the jets and the leaf blowers and the motorbikes are all gone then hopefully humans will endure.
When world war two finished it was found that were over two million people living in the New
Guinea highlands albeit at subsistence level that no one had even considered possible.
Similarly when forces moved into the Southern Sudan in response to the civil disturbance it was said on the news that over 5 million Sudanese were subsisiting on food aid. As Marx would say;”who called these people from the soil?” That is the question and what happens when the terran economy can no longer support the adventitious populations called into existence by feeding on the crumbs of the first world global economy.
In the meantime we occupy ourselves with endless distractions that are like and endless infantile regression. Once one has worn thin then on to the next one never caring about the heavy metals needed to produce all thes totally unnecessary needs that we never knew we had until somebody told us we did.
anyway the thing about laws is they are made by man. and can be unmade by man. The history of philosophy is the history of unmaking laws. Take Kurt Goedel for instance. A mathematician who showed that in artihmetic there are theorems that cannot be proved. Ditto for Bertrand Russell who showed that mathematics cannot be derived from logic and when he had issue and tried to educate them according to a system devised by himself thye became schizophrenic! and when I did the philosophy of mind the lecturer spent most of his time trying ot make us all co-dependent on his autistic son. Just ghastly the inability to achieve acceptance and believe that will can conquer what is not conquerable.
Back to laws Herodotus showed us that in some cases the law said bury the dead and in others to eat them.
errrrrkkkkkkk!
Anyway I copped a Rhino compilation of Linda Ronstadt yesterday. Impossible to put all her songs on one 2cd album but the good stuff is there.
Shje had over 19 platinum and gold albums but as Marcus Aurelius said the players are soon forgotten.
Damn.
Watched Bullit last night.
It is still just as good as it ever was and the souce for much of what came after,. surprise surprise!
Tonight will be Get Carter and tomorrow Once Upon A time in the West.
Relaxxxxxx...go back...go backkkkk...
hehehe.
local stuff. the gardener next door at the old folks home is a nitwit. Its all for show. first he tried to get rid of the broadleaf in the main lawn and nearly succeeded in killing the box hedge with the overspray. He has almost demolished the rose garden at the front entrance by pruing them to a method known only to him in the summertime and then turning on the srprinklers so the rot has set in and now they are aonly a pale ragged reflection of their former glory. and i Notice he has tried to grow tomatoes next to potatoes to show what a wonderful gardener he is but the potatoes have nearly gpt rid of the tomatoes.
hahahahahahahahaha.
And corrections seem to be unable to come to grips with the psychological peculiarites of the job. In monasteries they get rid of over religious novices and corrections should be able to determine which of their staff like to take prisoners in real life. Is there no understanding there? One officer in our strret has a large dog that the uses to intimidate the passersbye with. If it it ever gets free there will be trouble.
dig?
