american psychiatrist Gregory Zilboorg wrote  an exceptional book about psychiatry and medicine titled 'Mind Medicine And Man" which is a great primer for the beginner in psychology.
Zilboorg was the consumate humanist and his concern leads him to some questionable conclusions about the refractory nature of humans but his exposition is brilliant.
He asserts that societal punishment for various offences reflects the degree of guilt felt by persons who would like to commit the same crimes.

The thing is that Churches these days are filled up with politicians, real estate agents and salesmen who need another avenue for prospects and making connections.
they have no interest in religion or morals or ethics at all e xcept where it might impinge on their business interests.
