what chew looking at...

nothing.
you calling me nothing?

yes well.
got 25 hits yesterday.
wow.
Harry Truman said the main part of his job as president was making people do what they were supposed to do in the first place.
here in NZ we are experts in reinventing the wheel and wrapping important messages up in jargon to baffle the masses and take the guts out of anything and grease the skids so the issue disappears till it rears its ugly head again in another disturbing episode.

I got silence on my radio...

let the airwaves flow

"Moonlight Mile"

When the wind blows and the rain feels cold
With a head full of snow
With a head full of snow
In the window there's a face you know
Don't the nights pass slow
Don't the nights pass slow
The sound of strangers sending nothing to my mind
Just another mad mad day on the road
I am just living to be lying by your side
But I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Made a rag pile of my shiny clothes
Gonna warm my bones
Gonna warm my bones
I got silence on my radio
Let the air waves flow
Let the air waves flow
Oh I'm sleeping under strange strange skies
Just another mad mad day on the road
My dreams is fading down the railway line
I'm just about a moonlight mile down the road
I'm hiding sister and I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm hiding baby and I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm riding down you moonlight mile
Let it go now, come on up babe
Yeah, let it go now
Yeah, flow now baby
Yeah move on now yeah
Yeah, I'm coming home
'Cause, I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Down the road, down the road

"Sing This All Together"

Why don't we sing this song all together
Open our heads let the pictures come
And if we close all our eyes together
Then we will see where we all come from
Pictures of us through the steamy haze
Picture of us painted in our place
Why don't we sing this song all together
Open our heads let the pictures come
And if we close all our eyes together
Then we will see where we all come from
Why don't we sing this song all together
Open our heads let the pictures come
And if we close all our eyes together
Then we will see where we all come from
Pictures of us beating on our drum
Never stopping til the rain has come
Why don't we sing this song all together
Open our heads let the pictures come
And if we close all our eyes together
Then we will see where we all come from

Visited a friend last week and he sang these two songs.
got my a into g and am trying to get them under my belt too.
Not for any really good reason but they will make good busking songs if I ever get back into it.
Keefs lyrics always seem to have that louche effect and Mick says that he doesn't really care about these albums anymore but they are still mighty artefacts from the golden age of music.
yes indeedy.

R.I.P. Peter Gay...

looking for a piccy of Sigmund Freud when I found that one biographer Peter Gay had passed.
Gays books are eminently readable and tell convincing truths.

Gay is like Ralph Linton who was refused admittance to Columbia Anthropology school because FRanz Boas saw him in uniform  straight after WW11 and declared him a militarist and Boas' word was enough to convict anyone in those days.
hmmmmmm
Gays crime was to discover that Gibbon never wrote The Decline And Fall of the Roman Empire but that Gibbon had cribbed it all from an obscure French monk.

there ya go.
you get that on the big jobs.

RIP Ray Columbus...

Seeya later Ray.

it takes one to know one...

Never heard so much twaddle in my life as on Radio New Zealand this morning.
First up was that hoary old perennial bullying.
How many times has RNZ had this topic this year?
What has changed?
Bullying is epidemic in New Zealand.
Everyone is trying to be one up or enforce their will on someone else.
Perhaps there is nothing else for kiwis to do.
They snoop they pry they nark and if all else fails they get someone to give you the bash.
Mainly because they cant face the truth about themselves.
Criminality is all about getting what you want without having to work for it.
It is as simple as that but hey another academic from their ivory tower gets up on the radio and pontificates with their sociology jargon and nothing ever changes.
Anthropologists agree that there is no such thing as a national character but the advent of the Nazis in Germany demonstrates that people will just follow the party line.
and if that is bashing unfortunates, intimidating, standing over and taking off others so be it.
YOu can see it every day in any small town in New Zealand  after school is out  where there is a cohort that bullys the other kids for their lunch money or leftovers and nobody ever does anything about that.

And after that we had psychologist Waikaremoana Waitoki pontificating that mental illness is cultural specific.
Yes indeed.
It is specific to all cultures!
The greeks classified the three main syndromes 3000 years ago.
Manic Depression
Schizophrenia
Paranoia.
There are character disorders as well.
and most of them are refractory and resistant to any treatment.
If Ms Waitoki is correct and in this matter she is wrong then the question should be asked why does this particular culture throw up so many afflicted.
Furthermore psychology is not psychiatry and 6 years at university studying the rate of nerve impusles in the axons is no basis for  diagnosing and illness let alone attempting any sort of amelioration short of arguing with the patient which is a form of class bullying.
Ms Waitoki seems to be arguing for cultural relativism but if it takes one to know one (Sapir -Whorff hypothesis) then no one can know anybody else because we are all ones.
doh.
People living in different cultures cannot be living in  a different world they are just living differently in the same world and trying to create differences smacks of closed shop tactics to ensure an income and bu
llying the authorities with bushwah till they come across with the funds.

That is the kiwi way.
Ms Waitoki should get off her bum face the challenge and do the hard yards if she really wants to know what makes people ill otherwise she is just another postmodern dilletante.

Diagnosis

Bipolar disorder is commonly diagnosed during adolescence or early adulthood, but onset can occur throughout the life cycle.[2][59] The disorder can be difficult to distinguish from unipolar depression and the average delay in diagnosis is 5–10 years after symptoms begin.[60] Diagnosis of bipolar disorder takes several factors into account and considers the self-reported experiences of the symptomatic individual, abnormal behavior reported by family members, friends or co-workers, observable signs of illness as assessed by a clinician, and often a medical work-up to rule-out medical causes. Assessment is usually done on an outpatient basis; admission to an inpatient facility is considered if there is a risk to oneself or others. The most widely used criteria for diagnosing bipolar disorder are from the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Edition (ICD-10). The ICD-10 criteria are used more often in clinical settings outside of the U.S. while the DSM criteria are used clinically within the U.S. and are the prevailing criteria used internationally in research studies. The DSM-5, published in 2013, included further and more accurate specifiers compared to its predecessor, the DSM-IV-TR.[61]
Several rating scales for the screening and evaluation of bipolar disorder exist,[62] including the Bipolar spectrum diagnostic scale, Mood Disorder Questionnaire, and the HCL-32.[63] The use of evaluation scales can not substitute a full clinical interview but they serve to systematize the recollection of symptoms.[63] On the other hand, instruments for screening bipolar disorder tend to have lower sensitivity.[62]

Socrates as a philosopher

The problem with discerning Socrates' philosophical views stems from the perception of contradictions in statements made by the Socrates in the different dialogues of Plato. These contradictions produce doubt as to the actual philosophical doctrines of Socrates, within his milieu and as recorded by other individuals.[15] Aristotle, in his Magna Moralia, refers to Socrates in words which make it patent that the doctrine virtue is knowledge was held by Socrates. Within the Metaphysics, he states Socrates was occupied with the search for moral virtues, being the ' first to search for universal definitions for them '.[16]
The problem of understanding Socrates as a philosopher is shown in the following: In Xenophon's Symposium, Socrates is reported as saying he devotes himself only to what he regards as the most important art or occupation, that of discussing philosophy. However, in The Clouds, Aristophanes portrays Socrates as accepting payment for teaching and running a sophist school with Chaerephon. Also, in Plato's Apology and Symposium, as well as in Xenophon's accounts, Socrates explicitly denies accepting payment for teaching. More specifically, in the Apology, Socrates cites his poverty as proof that he is not a teacher.

Socrates Tears Alcibiades from the Embrace of Sensual Pleasure by Jean-Baptiste Regnault (1791)
Two fragments are extant of the writings by Timon of Phlius pertaining to Socrates,[17] although Timon is known to have written to ridicule and lampoon philosophy.[18][19]

Just got back from up norf.

bloody boring just driving along.

mile after frigging mile.

doh.

Have made contact with someone who is manic depressive.

They just say they have excess energy but it is obvious that the continual flow of adrenaline has done something to them.

The manic depressive is someone whose mind has played a psychic reversal trick on them due to the stresses of the manic episode to make the person act as if they were in a dream and not awake at all.

A bit like the way the mind switches  perceived images the right way up to the position they are actuallly received by the eyeballs.

hmmmm.

and Socrates.

Ostracism was not to rid the state of the worst but the best!.

The masses could not handle excessive brilliance!!!

And they murdered Socrates because he he said that that because a man knew something then he began to think he knew everything.

you get that on the big jobs.

hiwa hau maka...

Beware the Wild Winds

ev ery now and a gain a whole flood of ww11 books turns up at the Family Store.

shocking memoires of bravery and stupidity and slaughter.
friend, foe, civilian they all got smashed.
Anyway the KIWIS were noted for their bravery and willingness to defend the empire.
Desmond Scott, Robert Spurdle etc the list was long.
The great economist Alfred Marshall noted how quickly cities were rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries after the devastation of a war but that does not take away the tragedy and emotional damage.
Similar in Aleppo. All the while the war drags on and all the while the local population are purged in what amounts to ethnic cleansing. just a by product I suppose.
