For some strange reason Roy Orbison recordings are almost unobtainable in the usual channels. You can always get them off the interweb of course but I'm talking secondhand or from friends.

they have just gone.

A friend lent me  the dvd "Black and White Night" and I plugged the player in last night and watched it. I just want to learn Pretty Woman but the whole thing was compelling. By the time it was made Roy was losing a bit of timbre around the edges but his mighty 3 octave range was still there and oh so beyootiful. The restof the gang was in attendance. Elvis Presleys old band and a whole host of luminaries like JD Souther and Elvis costello and Tom Waits playing guitar and piano!!! Yes yes yes. there was a string section and Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes and KD Laing doing the oohs and ahs with some fervour and mighty grins. Everybody was having a ball and Brooce Windscreen gave as good as he got doing lead duels with the incomparable James Burton. I found myself looking at the old 14" and clapping at the end of every song.

It was gorgeous.

the piccys of the Douglas skyrocket are there because It was a a machine of truly aesthetic beauty.

so is the piccy of Felice who co-wrote the Everly Brothers best songs and mata hari is there because she was on the same site I got the pic of Felice.

Just finished reading "The Victorians" by A.N. Wilson. a harrowing journey through the satanic mills and the stupidity of the wealthy. Money is no guarantee of intellect. Especially if it has been inherited.

From hunter gatherers on the African Savannah to the in bred klonks of the British upper class is a bit much to take in all at once.

I live in New Zealand and I wonder why the co-operative movement never took off here. There are 4,500 shops in the UK but none here.

Everybody in New Zealand wants to believe that they are incognito members of the British upper class here to improve the colonials or came in the firs four ships or something but all they really want is a hardly davison and a plastic replica ford t-bucket so they can go downtown on a Saturday morning and make a big noise.

It is really amazing just how many different aircraft were operated by the RNZAF and how New Zealand pilots were in the van from WW1 onwards.

They might not have a combat wing at the moment but they will be ready if and when the need ever eventuates.

the Avro Lincoln was a development of the famous Lancaster but by that time the USA was already demonstrating superiority in design and performance with the Boeing B50 Washington and then came the jet era where the RNZAF were top operators of the English Electric Canberra.

Andrew gold was half of the team with Peter Asher that oversaw Linda Ronstadts rise to superstardom helping to select the songs, musicians and arranging and playing in the studio.

J.D. Souther is a songwriter par excellence and penned one of the most beautiful love songs ever written.

"Faithless Love" is on Heart Like A Wheel and is in the key of D flat to give it that extra air of piquancy that all the best songs have.

Meanwhile back in town. The strengthening work on the Masterton Courthouse has meant that Carterton is having a little mini renaissance and feels quite cosmopolitanan these days. wonders will never cease.

I think it was one of Grady Martins inventions and it is distinctive and meaty.

I checked it out on utoob t'other day and the 1964 version is the best one.

An RNZAF Ct4E went down on Friday. engine trouble. these ct4's very sprightly with 300hp lycoming engines.

the rest of the piccys are models that the RNZAF has operated either for the themselves or the RAF in wartime or in peacetime activities.

Aviation has always been important in New Zealand because of the terrain and the speed and ease of air transport. Kiwis cant fly but the natives can! yes indeedy.

 More music from the late 50's early 60's. Most of it is easily transcribed by ear and really great to play if one can ramp the desired excitement quotient.

The twelve bar blues form is really a very simple musical idiom but it has lent itself to innumerable twists and turns and provided a musical education for countless kids who just wanted to play a song on a guitar.

Its still accessible today of course but now nobody wants to know unless it has been pro tooled and squeezed out of a tube.
