Mental Health in New Zealand is complicated by a whole concatenation of factors.
1. Nobody knows what they are doing. sure they can read off the symptoms and provide a diagnosis straight out of the DSM V or whatever version it is up to now but DSM is just a handbook for the American insurance industry. It does not explain the etiology nor provide any clue as to therapy for the diagnosis..
2. Mental health is funded by providers (?) to stakeholders (?) on what basis nobody knows but themselves.
3. while no one would doubt the compassion and dedication of some staff it would appear that senior staff value their connections with law enforcement more than they do the welfare of their patients.
This is a very pointed indictment of the system but it is ongoing since the founding of the colony.
The first building erected in New Zealand by public subscribing was a "lunatic asylum" 'sic".
Mental health professionals in New Zealand are either psychologists who have spent their academic careers studying rats and rabbits or psychiatrists who have tacked on a bit of study to their GP qualifications.
The horrible little weasel Karl Popper scuppered dynamic psychiatry in New Zealand during ww11 when he slunk off to New Zealand during the war and when the stiff upper lip brigade returned post war they cemented the frozen position that had arisen in their absence.
The good ones stayed in England and the average and the so so and the ordinary returned to a fait accompli of something they just could not be bothered with.
Meanwhile Popper slunk back to England and the London School of Economics where he and A.J.P. Taylor and other academic "big wigs" tried to pepetrate the same fraud on post war England.
The effects of their ignorance and lack of concern are still being felt in New Zealand today.
Recently I talked to someone who had been incarcerated by subterfuge and held for three months before they managed to secure a release and before they had been smashed in to submission with pharmaceutical ethicals (larfs)
This person had two charges outstanding and they were heard by a judge who dismissed them. But as one was a different date they were arrested for not appearing and then shovelled off to Porirua.
Treatment was to be locked in a room while being observed by two Psychiatrists through a plate glass window .
No interviews took place and when they secured a release to prepare for more court charges they were released into the custody of another Lunatic Asylum in the wellington area.
Can anyone tell me how a person can be diagnosed by observation.
I might add that there was a campaign to bash this person up and almost everyone was complicit and of all the charges they faced none were proven.
It was only through pressure brought to bear by a massive campaign on face book that they were released.
Now even though I might be an amateur I know what this persons problem is and if the staff at Porirua were any good they could have made an appropriate diagnosis and prevented this travesty of justice and provision of care.
Until the whole system is re-engineered then it is always going to be suspect.
